Player Ratings: Liverpool 3-1 Man Utd

Manchester United were beaten 3-1 at Anfield this afternoon to remain 11 points outside of the top four and 19 points behind Premier League leaders Liverpool.

Sadio Mane opened the scoring midway through the first half as Liverpool dominated the start to the game. However, Alisson spilled Romelu Lukaku’s cross straight at him to gift Jesse Lingard an equaliser from close range.

Liverpool continued to take the game to us before Xherdan Shaqiri scored two deflected goals in the final 20 minutes, the first moments after coming on. We barely created any chances of note all game.

Here are how our players fared:

David de Gea 6 – Not given a chance with any of Sadio Mane or Xherdan Shaqiri’s goals. Made a fine save to deny Roberto Firmino early in the second half – one of eight saves during the game. Poor distribution of the ball.

Matteo Darmian 5 – Started as part of a back three before moving to right-back in the second half as part of a back four. Made several tackles and clearances to keep Liverpool at bay. Andrew Robertson and Sadio Mane combined to set up Liverpool’s winner with the aid of a couple of deflections.

Eric Bailly 6 – Put Dejan Lovren under enough pressure to prevent the Croatian from doubling Liverpool’s lead from inside the six-yard box just moments after they had taken the lead. Mohamed Salah wasn’t a huge influence in his striker role today. Unfortunate with Liverpool’s third that took a wicked deflection off Bailly in an attempt to block Shaqiri’s effort.

Victor Lindelof 6 – Looked nervous at the back in the opening 10 minutes as Liverpool took the game to us in his first appearance in nearly a month due to injury. Settled into the game thereafter. Made several blocks.

Diogo Dalot 4 – Struggled to deal with Andrew Robertson bombing forward and was booked inside half hour for tugging him back just outside the penalty area. Substituted at half-time – had been a doubt heading into the game.

Ander Herrera 4 – Worked hard defensively but not so well in possession. We hurt ourselves by failing to maintain possession for any lengthy spell of the game.

Nemanja Matic 4 – Got in the way of several Liverpool attempts on goal but struggled to get the ball back off the Liverpool players and was very sloppy in possession when he had it.

Ashley Young 4 – Made an important goalline clearance from a corner in the opening 10 minutes. Intercepted a Mohamed Salah cross to deny Liverpool a tap in midway through the first half. Caught out by Sadio Mane’s run off the ball moments late for the home side to take the lead. Unfortunate with the deflection off of home for Liverpool’s second.

Jesse Lingard 4 – Forced home our equaliser in the first half following a howler from Alisson in the Liverpool goal. Worked hard off the ball, but went missing in the second half when he was moved to the right-hand side to help deal with Andrew Robertson to no avail.

Marcus Rashford 7 – Worked very well defensively down the left-hand side as Liverpool dominated possession and territory. Looked sharp but was often outnumbered when in possession trying to start attacks from inside his own half.

Romelu Lukaku 3 – Provided the cross that Alisson spilled to gift Jesse Lingard’s equaliser. However, Romelu Lukaku played up against Virgil van Dijk instead of Dejan Lovren despite bullying the Croatian out of the game back in March. Harshly booked for a tackle on Naby Keita. Saw very little supply.

Marouane Fellaini (45 mins) 4 – Came on at half-time as Jose changed formation. Marouane Fellaini won a couple of headers and tackles but couldn’t keep hold of the ball or find a teammate when he was in possession.

Anthony Martial (13 mins) N/A – Introduced at 1-2 and we conceded shortly after. Anthony Martial didn’t test Alisson.

Juan Mata (7 mins) N/A – Brought on at 1-3 but with too little time to rescue the game. Juan Mata barely saw the ball anyway.
