Player Ratings: Huddersfield 2-1 Man Utd

Manchester United suffered their first defeat of the 2017-18 Premier League season today as we went down 2-1 at Huddersfield Town.

The Premier League newcomers scored twice in 11 minutes after Victor Lindelof was brought on for the injured Phil Jones on 23 minutes.

Marcus Rashford scored a late consolation for us in the 78th minute as we fall five points behind Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Here are how our players fared:

David de Gea 4

Could have done better with Aaron Mooy’s effort in the build up to Huddersfield’s opener and was out of position for the second in an unusually poor performance.

Antonio Valencia 6

A fine performance from the captain but didn’t offer much going forward as I said Antonio Valencia would need to in yesterday’s preview.

Phil Jones N/A

Was solid in the opening 22 minutes before he pulled up with an injury and was replaced.

Chris Smalling 6

Made some important headers but was out position at times.  Chris Smalling missed a good chance to equaliser in the fourth minute of stoppage time.

Ashley Young 6

A bright start to the game but Ashley Young faded out in the second half when we desperately needed some more creativity and good crosses in the final third.

Nemanja Matic 7

Another good performance from Nemanja Matic despite a woeful performance from the team overall.  Looked to bring the ball forward to start attacks but was let down by his teammates in the final third.

Ander Herrera 6

Showed a lot of energy and fight in the middle of the park but was woeful in attack.

Jesse Lingard 6

Made some nice runs off the ball but once again there was no impact in the final third from Jesse Lingard

Juan Mata 5

Sloppy in conceding possession on the halfway that led to Huddersfield’s opener.  Juan Mata couldn’t get anything going in attack and was replaced by Henrikh Mkhitaryan at half-time.

Anthony Martial 5

A frustrating first half that saw Anthony Martial booked after eight minutes.  Constantly found himself surrounded by more than one opponent and was replaced by Marcus Rashford for the start of the second half.

Romelu Lukaku 5

A third consecutive game that Romelu Lukaku has not even looked like scoring but did provide an excellent assist for Rashford’s consolation.

Substitutes

Victor Lindelof (67 mins) 2 – Looked weak in the build up to Huddersfield’s opener and then some Sunday League level defending for their second.

Henrikh Mkhitaryan (45 mins) 6 – Looked sharper today than Henrikh Mkhitaryan had in his previous two games, picking up the ball in space and bringing it forward, but often failing to pick out a teammate.

Marcus Rashford (45 mins) 6 – Scored from the substitutes bench once again this season and had looked like our best attacking threat after coming on at half-time.
