Andrea Pirlo has described Paul Scholes as the greatest player he has ever faced, becoming the latest footballer to sing the praise of the former United midfielder.
The Juventus man has been of the best in his role over the last 15 years and on Saturday he will try to add a third Champions League winner’s medal to the two he won with AC Milan, as the Serie A champions face Barcelona in Berlin.
The 2006 World Cup winner has played with or against the likes of Kaka, Zinedine Zidane, Alessandro del Piero, Francesco Totti and will face Lionel Messi on the weekend, but one man stands heads and shoulders above the rest.
“I have been so fortunate to have played with so many incredible players throughout my career, but if I could pick one that I never got the chance to play with, it would be Paul Scholes,” Pirlo said.
“One of the all-time greats. A genius on the field, but private – no circus around him off it. I have a lot of respect for him.”
Pirlo faced Scholes when Inter Milan played United in 1998-99 and then when Ac Milan faced Sir Alex Ferguson’s side in 2004-05, 2006-07 and 2010-11.
