Manchester United have completed the signing of Diogo Dalot from FC Porto.

The 19-year-old joins us in a £19 million deal from the Portuguese champions, signing a five-year contract at Old Trafford.

Dalot made his debut for the first time last season but played all seven of his games at left-back in place of the injured Alex Telles.  He is naturally a right-back and is expected to be Antonio Valencia’s long-term replacement.

The teenager has represented Portugal at under-21 level and featured against Liverpool in the Champions League this past season.

Jose believes we have signed one of the best prospect defenders in Europe:

“In his age group, he is the best full-back in Europe.

“He is an extremely talented young defender with all the qualities to quickly become a great player for this club.

“He has all the attributes that a full back needs: physicality, tactical intelligence and technical quality, combined with a Porto academy mentality which prepares players for the maturity they need at the professional level.”

Diogo Dalot is our second signing of the summer having agreed a deal for Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday, for a reported £47 million.

Last season Antonio Valencia and Matteo Darmian were our only out-and-out right-backs at the club and the latter is expected to join Juventus later this summer.

Phil Jones and Victor Lindelof have both covered in the position at times but it’s good to have a promising youngster here to provide competition for Antonio Valencia, who turns 33 before the start of next season.

Dalot stands at 6’ but we’ve not seen him sufficiently to make any further judgement just yet.
