Phil Jones to miss Champions League opener

Phil Jones will miss Manchester United’s Champions League opener versus FC Basel next week after the club decided to withdraw our original appeal over the defender’s two-match ban.

UEFA handed the England international the ban for reportedly abusing a match official following our Europa League final victory over Ajax back in May.

Jones already sat out of our UEFA Super Cup loss to Real Madrid at the start of August as a result.  UEFA were then going to review our application after the match.

However, UEFA have now confirmed that we have withdrawn our appeal against Phil Jones’ suspension.

As well as being handed a two-game ban, the 25-year-old was also hit with a €5,000 (£4.5k) fine.

This means Phil Jones will be unavailable for our opening Champions League group stage game against FC Basel at Old Trafford next Tuesday.  He will be joined by his centre-back partner Eric Bailly who is still serving a suspension for being sent off in the second leg of our Europa League semi-final.

Bailly and Jones have been solid in our opening three Premier League games this season, helping us to keep a clean sheet in all three Premier League matches and only allowing five shots on target during those 270 minutes.

Jose Mourinho have already confirmed that Chris Smalling and Victor Lindelof will be the centre-back duo to take on the Swiss champions.
