Manchester United have the opportunity to return to winning ways in the Premier League when they face Southampton on the road on Saturday. The Red Devils have picked up just one point from the previous two games against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Crystal Palace respectively, but they could have accumulated at least three more points, had they made the most of the penalties rewarded.
Formation: 4-2-3-1
Predicted Lineup:
David de Gea had a frustrating game against Crystal Palace last weekend where he should have done better to keep out Patrick van Aanholt’s winner at the near post. Despite this, he should command the role between the sticks for the Red Devils at St Mary’s.
In the defence, there will be an enforced change with Luke Shaw sidelined with a hamstring problem. In his place, Ashley Young should feature on the left side of the defence and should be handed with the captain’s armband. Aaron Wan-Bissaka, who recently earned his maiden England call-up, will feature in the right-back spot with Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof making up the heart of the backline.
In the centre of the park, Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba are very much certain to take up their positions ahead of Nemanja Matic and Fred. Both McTominay and Pogba have looked far from their best form this season, but Ole Gunnar Solskjaer should continue to back the pair, given his intention to work with a settled combination.
In the attack, Anthony Martial is certainly out of contention following the thigh problem picked up during the closing stages of the 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace at Old Trafford. In this case, Marcus Rashford should lead the line against the Saints and he will want to redeem himself after squandering the chance to convert from a spotkick last weekend.
Behind Rashford, Andreas Pereira will possible feature in the number 10 position with Jesse Lingard and last week’s scorer Daniel James slotting into the right and left wing roles respectively. Lingard’s performances have come under the radar this season but judging by Ole’s selection policy, the England international should feature from the off ahead of the young Mason Greenwood, who has managed just 39 minutes off the bench this term.
Predicted Man United lineup against Southampton: David de Gea, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Ashley Young, Scott McTominay, Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Andreas Pereira, Daniel James, Marcus Rashford
