Opinion: Manchester United should forget Frenkie de Jong and sign these two unbelievable players for price of one

How long can Manchester United sit back and wait around for Barcelona midfielder Frenkie de Jong to actually make a decision?

United have reportedly agreed a £63 million fee with Barcelona for the 25-year-old midfielder according to a report from the Express.

However, the 44-capped Holland international allegedly doesn’t want to join his former manager Erik ten Hag at Old Trafford (the Express).

There is a genuine danger that United will wait all summer for De Jong, only to miss out on him to a club like Chelsea at the final knockings. And then Ten Hag really will be behind the eight ball.

It’s time for the Dutchman to move on in our view. There are plenty of top-class midfielders out there and available this summer.

Two names in particular who United have been linked with are Fabian Ruiz of Napoli (Area Napoli) and Konrad Laimer of RB Leipzig (

Both players are genuinely elite and signing them both would work out cheaper than bringing De Jong to Old Trafford. It really should be a no-brainer for Ten Hag.

Frenkie De Jong is making Manchester united wait too long

Manchester United must move on from Frenkie de Jong

Heading into the hectic schedule between now and the World Cup without strengthening his central midfield ranks should quite simply not be an option for Ten Hag.

So rather than continue waiting for his countryman De Jong, Ten Hag should just sign Fabian Ruiz and Konrad Laimer instead.

The Spaniard is available for just £21m this summer (Area Napoli) whilst the Austrian could be signed for around £25m (Bavarian Football Works). That works out at £17m cheaper than De Jong for two players!

Ruiz would be a superb signing for United in our view. The 26-year-old has been compared to Spain and Barcelona legend Xavi by The Coaches Voice. Whilst he might not be at the same level as Xavi, he certainly possesses similar traits.

He can operate in an orthodox central midfield role or the deep-lying position. He can even play further forward in a more attacking role.

Last season, Ruiz bagged seven goals and five assists in 38 games for Napoli. He is an intelligent footballer and a very good passer of the ball with exceptional technique and impressive vision.

In 32 Serie A appearances for Napoli last season, the Spaniard made 67.9 passes per match and recorded a hugely impressive completion rate of 90.5%. He would be a strong addition to Ten Hag’s ranks at Old Trafford.

Ruiz the ideal man for United

The comparisons with Xavi come from the way in which he waits until the last possible moment before releasing his passes. He would certainly add another facet to United’s play through the middle of the park.

Meanwhile, Laimer would be a quality signing for the Red Devils as well. The 25-year-old bagged four goals and four assists in 26 Bundesliga games for Leipzig last season.

During those appearances, he averaged 1.5 tackles and 1.1 dribbles per match. Laimer made 26.6 passes on average per game and recorded a completion rate of 80.3%.

Ruiz and Laimer together would be the perfect midfield partnership for United. Signing them both would certainly be more cost-effective than bringing De Jong to Old Trafford this summer.
