Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sends top scout to watch £49.5m Premier League star – report

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is understood to have sent his personal scout Simon Wells to watch midfielder Declan Rice in action for West Ham United against Sheffield United in the Premier League.

The England international was highlighted as a regular transfer target for the Red Devils last summer but unfortunately, a deal never materialised with the club placing the emphasis on strengthening the defence.

Rice has since experienced a testing season with the Hammers in the Premier League but The Mail claims that the Red Devils could still move for his services at the end of the ongoing campaign.

Wells, who has been employed as the chief scout by Solskjaer to improve the first-team, is said to have monitored Rice’s display at Bramall Lane, where he bagged an assist before the intervention of the VAR which chalked off the equalising goal due to his handball.

A section of the United fans don’t seem to prefer the possible signing of Rice but there appears some interest from Solskjaer, who has placed the focus on signing young and emerging talents with decent experience.

The 21-year-old, who is valued at £49.5m as per Transfermarkt, has featured in either the defensive midfield or central defensive role for the Hammers but he has been more comfortable in the former of those positions.

With Nemanja Matic being linked with a possible exit, Rice could be regarded as a direct replacement for the Serbian next summer. The 31-year-old’s current deal expires at the end of the season but United are likely to trigger the 12-month extension clause available.
