Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has reportedly urged executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward to make an attempt to sign Donny van de Beek from Ajax during the current transfer window.
The Red Devils are working with limited options in the centre of the park following the knee ligament injury for Scott McTominay and the recent ankle surgery for Paul Pogba.
Fred, Nemanja Matic and Andreas Pereira are presently the only specialist senior midfielders in the squad and ESPN claims that Solskjaer is eager to address the issue before the end of the month.
As per the publication, the Norwegian holds a keen interest in signing van de Beek from Dutch champions Ajax and he has communicated the same to Woodward, who is responsible for the transfer proceedings.
Ajax have been reluctant to offload any of their prized assets at the midway stage of recent seasons but ESPN suggests that their failure to make the Champions League knock-outs could contribute towards the midfielder’s exit.
Van de Beek is capable of operating in different midfield positions and he has the knack of making goalscoring contributions with eight goals and five assists in the Eredivisie and Champions League combined this season.
As such, the Dutchman perfectly suits United, who have lacked a creative midfielder in the injury absence of Pogba and at his age (22), he also meets Solskjaer’s requirement of players, who have plenty of room for development in the future.
Van de Beek is said to be valued in excess of £50m and it remains to be seen whether United can convince the Dutchman to head to Old Trafford amid competition from the likes of Real Madrid, who have been holding a strong interest in his signature from last summer.
