Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has provided an injury update on three first-team stars in the lead up to the club’s Premier League clash against Everton at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils needed to avoid a defeat against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday night in order to seal the top spot in their Europa League group and they did it in style with a convincing second-half performance.
Mason Greenwood was undoubtedly the star on the night with two goals and an assist as United scored four goals past Alkmaar at Old Trafford without reply.
Following that game, Solskjaer was asked for an update on the fitness of Eric Bailly, Timothy Fosu-Mensah and Paul Pogba to which he replied:
“Next week, Eric [Bailly] will start training, Tim [Fosu-Mensah] will start training, Paul will probably start training with us next week properly. So let’s see.”
Meanwhile, Jesse Lingard was not included in the matchday squad to face Alkmaar with a knock sustained during the Manchester derby and Solskjaer remains unsure over his involvement on Sunday.
“I’m not sure about Jesse, but I hope [he can feature].He wasn’t training today, but we’ll check him on Saturday probably,” he added.
United recently bagged successive Premier League wins for the first time this season and this has brought them within five points off Chelsea in the race for the final Champions League spot.
On Sunday, the Red Devils are scheduled to entertain Everton in their home patch and they should be favourites to beat the Toffees despite the Merseyside club’s surprise win over Chelsea last weekend.
Solskjaer will mostly revert to the same lineup that beat the Cityzens on the road but it will be interesting to see whether Greenwood is rewarded with a starting place after his superb display against Alkmaar.
