Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has provided a fitness update on Paul Pogba ahead of the first leg of the Europa League round of 16 tie against Linzer ASK.
The Frenchman has been out of action for the past 10 weeks following an ankle operation but he is nearing a return to regular training with his United teammates.
Speaking in a press conference on Wednesday, Solskjaer confirmed that Pogba is ‘getting closer’ to making his comeback and could report for the full training sessions by next week.
“Paul is getting closer, yes. But, today, he wasn’t with the team and has not trained with the team yet. Hopefully, by next week, he will be ready,” he told.
Pogba is unlikely to be rushed back to competitive action by Solskjaer, considering he had picked up multiple recurrences of an ankle injury during the first half of the campaign.
The 26-year-old will require at least a couple of weeks of regular training to get into shape and hopefully, he can shine for the club in the games following the international break
United have remained unbeaten over the past 10 games in all competitions and they recently registered a 2-0 win over Manchester City in the Premier League, where Anthony Martial and Scott McTominay scored.
Martial won’t feature at the Linzer Stadium on Thursday after suffering cuts to his shins following the contact made with the goalpost during the derby. Odion Ighalo is expected to take up the striker’s position in his absence.
