Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that the club are looking to negotiate a new contract with academy graduate Angel Gomes.
Tahith Chong recently committed his future to United by signing a fresh three-year contract and the focus now appears to have shifted towards Gomes, whose current deal with the club expires in June.
Speaking in a press conference on Wednesday, Solskjaer was pleased with the contract extension for Chong and believes the Dutchman has the ability to develop into a ‘very good player’.
He added that the club will seek to negotiate a new deal with Gomes, who is highly regarded by the coaching staff despite his limited gametime with the first-team squad this season.
“With Tahith, we’re very happy that he can see his future here and we can see a very good player there and we’ll give him the time that he needs to develop. That’s the same with Angel, we hope that we can convince him that both in the near future and the long future, he’s a Man United player,” he told.
Both Chong and Gomes have struggled to receive regular playing time under Solskjaer this season and it seemed that the duo could be heading through the exit door for free in the summer.
Chong was recently convinced to put pen-to-paper on a new and improved deal and it remains to be seen whether Gomes will follow suit and extend his own stay with the Mancunian giants.
The 19-year-old has made just five first-team appearances under Solskjaer this season. He could be handed a loan stint away from the club next season, suppose he renews his contract.
