Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has indicated that Scott McTominay could make the matchday squad to face Watford in the forthcoming Premier League clash at Old Trafford.
The Scotland international has been out of contention since the knee ligament injury sustained against Newcastle United on Boxing Day but he is close to making his comeback.
McTominay has been involved in the full training sessions since the club’s return from the winter break and Solskjaer believes the midfielder could make the bench for the Hornets game.
“I think he might be in the squad. He had a rest day today, so let’s see how he is tomorrow,” he told in a press conference following Thursday’s Europa League game in Bruges.
Nemanja Matic and Fred have been the regular choices for Solskjaer in the injury absence of McTominay and Paul Pogba, and the duo are expected to retain their roles for the upcoming clash.
Considering his recent absence, McTominay may not be introduced on the playing field on Sunday afternoon unless United find themselves in a commanding position against Nigel Pearson’s side.
Manchester United are currently seventh in the Premier League standings with 38 points on the board and they have the chance to jump to the fifth spot with a victory over the Hornets.
At present, the fifth position offers a Champions League group stage berth for next season but that could change, should Manchester City win their CAS appeal over a two-year European competition ban.
As such, the top four should definitely remain the aim for Solskjaer’s side and they have the opportunity to close the gap to fourth-placed Chelsea to just three points with a win on Sunday.
