Just when it looked like Manchester United were about to fall to their second home loss of the Premier League campaign, Mason Greenwood made his presence felt to score a stunning equalizer to win his side a point.
In what was a day of celebration marking the 4,000 game in which a United youth academy graduate was part of the match-day squad, it was their latest youth graduate to score his second league goal of the season.
As a matter of fact, Greenwood’s United’s second-highest goal-scorer with seven goals across all competitions, one more than Anthony Martial.
His finishing ability has seen praise from Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the past and the Norwegian hailed his instincts again after the Everton draw.
Praising the youngster for his composure in the final third, Ole said, “You wanted the ball to drop to Mason because he’s so calm and composed in there, when he gets a chance he takes his chances.”
Solskjaer also reiterated that it comes very naturally for Greenwood to score in those situations, praising his unique ability to score with either feet and unpredictability to blast the ball into the net from narrow angles.
He explained, “It’s just so natural for him, knows exactly what to do, because if you open your legs he shoots through you, if you close your legs he bends it round you. He can go right and left.”
“Too many chances are missed, in general, in football of strikers rushing the finish, stressing, but the best ones have that little extra half second and he does.”, the Norwegian further added to douse even more praise on the exciting teenager.
Greenwood’s excellent form has sought a lot of praise from the fans, with many wanting him drafted into the starting lineup ahead of Anthony Martial, who suffered a bad game against the Toons.
Robin Van Persie, with whom the youngster is linked with because of the stark similarity in his style with the former United striker, also encouraged Greenwood to keep on doing what he does to succeed.
He jokingly said, “I think he will be very good because during every game he tries to copy me. My style, my technique, my left foot, my way of finishing… so, I’m sure he will end up there [like me].”
Greenwood will get his chance to shine once again when United host Colchester United on Wednesday in their Carabao Cup quarter-final encounter.
A win will see the Red Devils move into the semi-finals and considering how Solskjaer’s expressed his desire to compete for such competitions, his side will go all guns blazing to get back to winning ways in the mid-week game.
