Ole Gunnar Solskjaer explains absence of Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has provided an update on midfielders Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba, who were missing for the recent Premier League win at Burnley.

McTominay was substituted at the midway stage of the 4-1 triumph over Newcastle United on Boxing Day and Solskjaer confirmed after that game that the Scotland international had suffered a knee ligament injury.

As such, the 23-year-old’s absence against the Clarets was unsurprising and speaking prior to the clash, the Norwegian acknowledged that the club graduate could be sidelined for a while.

“Yeah we’ve looked at him, but we haven’t done the full scan yet. Over the weekend, we’ll know more. It didn’t look good but we hope it’s going to heal quickly,” he told.

Meanwhile, Pogba’s absence came as a surprise, given he has just returned to first-team action after a lengthy injury break. When asked about the Frenchman, Solskjaer stated that he was just being rested.

“Paul has played in two games now and been out for a while. We didn’t feel it was right to bring him today,” he added.

United were the dominant side through the first half of Saturday’s league clash against the Clarets and they managed to find the breakthrough prior to the interval with Anthony Martial scoring after a terrific interception from Andreas Pereira, who provided the assist.

In the second half, Sean Dyche’s side stepped up their game as they found themselves in a number of attacking positions but United managed to restrict them to a single shot on target, which needed David de Gea to make a diving save towards his right.

The Red Devils eventually grabbed the second goal in the dying seconds of the game through Marcus Rashford but the credit should go to Daniel James, who grabbed the assist and was terrific with his tackling and workrate throughout the game.
