Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirms key injury blow after win over Newcastle United

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that midfielder Scott McTominay has sustained a knee ligament damage during the club’s 4-1 Premier League win over Newcastle United on Boxing Day.

The Scotland international has been one of Solskjaer’s most reliable players this season and he started his fifth top-flight game on the bounce when Steve Bruce’s side made the trip to Old Trafford.

Within the opening 30 seconds, McTominay was booked for a rash challenge on Sean Longstaff with his studs and he could have quite easily received a red card at a different stage of the game.

Shortly after, McTominay was seen struggling with a knee concern as a result of that challenge, but he was able to see off the entire half before he was replaced with Paul Pogba in midfield.

Initially, it was suggested that Solskjaer may have been cautious due to the midfielder’s yellow card but the Norwegian has now confirmed that the 23-year-old has sustained some kind of ligament damage in his knee.

McTominay was spotted leaving the ground on crutches after the club’s victory but Solskjaer has refused to provide a timescale for his recovery until the midfielder goes through the necessary scans.

“He’s done his ligament in his knee, probably. We don’t know how bad it is, so let’s see. The boy has got the biggest heart of the lot. He played until half-time but we know when they stiffen up after. We’ll have to find out tomorrow, how he is,” he said via the club’s official website.

The long-term absence of McTominay would certainly prove a blow for the Red Devils, given he has formed an impressive partnership alongside Fred in the centre of the park as the season has progressed.

Still, the return of Paul Pogba from an injury of his own, should ease some of the concerns and hopefully, McTominay can make a quick recovery and return to the playing field at the earliest.
