Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed a fresh injury setback with Jesse Lingard suffering a hamstring injury during the closing stages of the 0-0 draw against AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League.
The Red Devils had the opportunity to end a nine-match winless streak on the road but they failed to do so after producing a poor performance at Alkmaar, where they could not register a shot on target.
Lingard was introduced in place of Marcus Rashford for the final 15 minutes of the game, but he could not make the difference and was forced off the pitch in stoppage time with an evident hamstring concern.
Speaking after the goalless stalemate, Solskjaer confirmed that Lingard has indeed picked up a hamstring injury but he is hopeful that the attacker will be available for the Liverpool clash after the international break.
“He tweaked his hamstring, so he didn’t feel like he could risk it. But hopefully it’s not too bad. Probably not Newcastle, but [he should] be ready for Liverpool [in the Premier League on Sunday 20 October],” he was quoted as saying on the club’s official website.
Lingard has been pretty much average with his performances over the past year, but he has nonetheless got the regular nod for the starting XI under Solskjaer with his workrate and high pressing highlighted as reasons.
In the absence of Lingard, one of Juan Mata or Angel Gomes could feature in the attack this weekend and Solskjaer will be hoping that his players can get the better of Newcastle United at St James Park to register the club’s first away victory since March.
