Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has confirmed that Nemanja Matic has agreed on a contract extension which will keep him at Old Trafford for the 2020/21 season.
The Serbian looked out-of-favour under Solskjaer during the first half of the current campaign and it appeared that he could head through the exit door at the turn of the year.
However, injuries to Scott McTominay and Paul Pogba in December meant that Matic was handed with a regular starting role alongside Fred and he has certainly proved his worth with a number of top-notch displays.
Prior to yesterday’s Manchester derby, Solskjaer confirmed that the midfielder will definitely remain with the club next term, he told: “We have agreed with him so he will stay, 100 per cent.”
As per The Telegraph, United are said to have triggered the extension clause available in Matic’s deal and that will guarantee his stay with the club until the summer of 2021.
Matic has been nearly ever-present for United in the Premier League this year and he has missed the solitary game against Wolverhampton Wanderers due to a one-match domestic suspension.
He recently starred for the Red Devils in the 2-0 league win over Manchester City in the derby where he was preferred to partner Fred despite McTominay being available following his injury layoff.
Manchester United are scheduled to face Austrian side LASK on the road during the first leg of the Europa League round of 16 tie on Thursday. One of Fred or Matic could drop to the bench for McTominay to start.
