Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confident 26-year-old will have big season at Manchester United

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has assured that midfielder Fred will have a ‘big season’ with the club despite enduring a quiet beginning to his Premier League career last term.

The 26-year-old joined the Red Devils from Shakhtar Donetsk last year amid much fanfare but he could not make an immediate impact on the proceedings and was made to settle for a bit-part role.

Despite this, there were glimpses of his immense ability during the backend of the previous campaign and Solskjaer is confident that the Brazilian can become a influential player for the club.

Ahead of the Wolves game, Solskjaer spoke about the need for a settled lineup from the defence while talking up the prospect of Fred having a big season with the team.

“Good teams I played in we always had a strong base, a keeper, settled backline and we hope to provide that for our attackers and midfielders. We believe Fred is going to have a big season as well,” he was quoted by Metro.

United decided against pursuing a new midfielder during the recent transfer window and that shows the confidence Solskjaer has on the current crop of players operating in the centre of the park.

Unlike Scott McTominay or Paul Pogba, Fred has struggled to cope with the physical demands of the Premier League and his tendency to get dispossessed in key areas has been another point of concern.

Still, he has the technicality and nimbleness to get through tight situations on his day and hopefully, he can prove his worth under Solskjaer during the course of the current campaign.
