The transfer market is over. Manchester United have failed to sign their #1 target Jadon Sancho.
As per The Athletic, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer urged Ed Woodward to keep trying for a move for Sancho but nothing fruitful yielded.
Personal terms with Sancho was not a problem. Borussia Dortmund set a 10th August deadline after which Sancho were to join BVB’s training camp.
United didn’t take the deadline seriously as they thought its a negotiating technique for the massive £108m asked.
BVB chiefs came out in public and announced that Sancho is set to stay with the German club. United didn’t give up.
United made efforts to sign Sancho even after the deadline set by BVB. Matt Judge launched a £80m plus add-ons bid for Sancho through the intermediaries in the final week of September. However, BVB chief Hans-Joachim Watzke rejected the offer immediately.
Sancho himself felt undervalued by United. And even if United had met BVB’s demands late on, it is understood he’d raise questions as to why it took so much time. He was never going to go on a strike against BVB and force a move. He was relaxed either way.
The Athletic claims that the only way United could have signed Sancho after the deadline was with a ‘crazy’ offer similar to Neymar’s £200m deal. Sources understands that an offer between the lines of £140m-£150m could’ve lured BVB into selling the player.
But we all know Sancho isn’t worth in the post-COVID market. And Man United were not going to pay up. United missed an opportunity to sign Sancho and make serious enhancements to their squad ahead of Champions League fixtures.
However, what’s done is done and dusted. Eight weeks remain for the winter transfer window to kickstart. With an underwhelming performance in the summer, United should make moves.
