Eric Bailly started Manchester United’s FA Cup semi-final versus Chelsea at Wembley Stadium on Sunday.
The Ivorian was playing a back three with the score at 0-0 shortly before half-time when he went down with a second clash of heads in a matter of minutes.
Bailly had first collided with Chelsea’s Kurt Zouma before clashing with Harry Maguire minutes later. The club captain was able to carry on for the full game whilst Bailly would stay down for nearly 10 minutes before he was stretchered off.
Speaking at his post-match press conference after the game, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer gave the following injury update on the centre-back:
“Eric is in hospital, going through all the routine checks and protocols. He got a cut in the back of his head as well so I don’t really know any more. I haven’t heard or spoken to the doctor about him.
“Eric was [until then] a big part of us not having any chances created against us really.”
During the substantial 11 minutes of stoppage time that were added to the first half as a result, Olivier Giroud gave Chelsea a 1-0 lead heading into half-time.
Chelsea ran out comfortable 3-1 winners in the end.
Manchester United’s focus must now move back to the Premier League, where we host West Ham United on Wednesday and travel to Leicester City in our season finale on Sunday, needing two points to assure us a top four finish.
Eric Bailly had been making only his second start since the resumption, having previously started in our FA Cup quarter-final victory against Norwich City.
