Manchester United missed out on their long-term target Filip Stevanovic to their cross-town rivals in Manchester City. During the transfer window, Fabrizio Romano confirmed that it’s a done deal between United and the 18-year-old winger.
However, the deal somehow didn’t get over the line in time.
Sensing the opportunity, Manchester City jumped into action and secured the Serbian U-19 winger’s services.
According to a report from The Athletic, the Citizens would pay a transfer fee of £6 million to secure the services of the bright youngster.
The 18-year-old right-winger would join Manchester City in January, as confirmed by the Serbian club.
Taking the matter to their social media account earlier this Saturday, the selling club wrote:
“Partizan is pleased to announce the transfer of Filip Stevanovic to Manchester City in the 2021 winter transfer window.
“The transfer of Filip Stevanovic to one of the largest clubs in Europe is a significant confirmation of the hard work being done at the club.”
Our take
United signed Amad Traore and Facundo Pellistri. They didn’t need to sign Stevanovic. Sky is the limit for all the three players. We cannot pass a judgement whether United missed out on something valuable or not.
For what it takes, United have the best in-class academy in England and it’d take more than a century for City to match their rivals. However, we have to acknowledge that United did miss out on a player they were ready to sign.
