Manchester United right-back Noussair Mazraoui delivered a solid performance for Morocco during their 3-0 win over Canada in the World Cup round of 16.
The Atlas Lions went into the game as slight favourites. They had a tightly contested opening half against the co-hosts, but were the better side after the break.
Azzedine Ounahi grabbed the headlines yesterday by scoring a brace, but there were several other standout performers, including Mazraoui from left-back.
The 28-year-old has exclusively played from the left-back position for his country at the World Cup, and he has hardly put a foot wrong with consistent displays.
Against Canada, the Red Devils ace won 12 duels and made 10 clearances. He also made five recoveries over 90 minutes, while inducing four fouls from the opposition.
Mazraoui has been a revelation from the left side of the back four for Morocco, and it could be a good thing for United, who need a proper backup behind Luke Shaw next term.
Shaw was ever-present in the Premier League last season as he stayed unscathed. However, it could be a different scenario next term with more training sessions and European matches.
With Shaw’s long-standing injury record, United are exploring a possible deputy at left-back, given Patrick Dorgu is considered a left winger by the club. His future could lie in that role.
United have been linked with Newcastle’s Lewis Hall, but he won’t come on the cheap due to a £50m price tag. The fee could be even higher, given the Magpies are in a strong financial position after recouping £170m from the sales of Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali this summer.
In our view, the Red Devils need not look further than Mazraoui for the deputy position. The £17m signing has proved his credentials as a left-back on the big stage with Morocco.
He has shown consistency over a four-match stretch, winning regular duels and tackles. He has also exhibited a tireless work rate and excelled with his physical presence, particularly against Brazil.
Hence, we won’t be surprised if United view him as a potential competitor to Shaw next season.
United could save funds, which could be utilised to sign another two midfielders. The club have an unexpected void to fill after Manuel Ugarte sustained a serious knee injury while playing for Uruguay against Spain.
