New Boy, Van de Beek, impressing everyone at the theatre of dreams

Nowadays, it’s hard to tell what to expect from a foreign coming into a competitive and unpredictable league like the Premier League.

At least traditionally, everyone knew that foreign players needed a period of adaptation to adjust to the English top tier’s technicalities, and afterward, they settle in just fine.

These days, however, we’ve seen foreign players coming in to take the league by storm in their first seasons (HelloBruno), and we’ve also seen many more struggling to adjust to the fast-paced nature of the league (should we name names?).

So when Man United announced the signing of Van De Beek, it was only natural to see fans exercising a little bit of caution when hyping the player.

Even if everyone was buzzing about their club’s latest signing, I’m sure a Man United fan should know better than to do the same – not with the number of failed transfers the club has made in recent seasons.

Another needless signing?

Before the announcement of Donny’s signing, the debate amongst Manchester United fans was whether or not the club needed a player of the Dutch’s quality.

With names like Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes already on the club’s books, fans felt there was no need to bring in another playmaker, especially when the club is even nowhere close to their biggest transfer pursuit of the window – Jadon Sancho.

When the announcement finally came, it was a case of acceptance for the fans, many of whom are now convinced Donny has what it takes to shine at the Theatre of Dreams.

Van De Beek showing promising signs

If the early signs are anything to go by, then it’s safe to say that Man United have pulled a great deal with the signing of Van De Beek.

The Dutch gave fans reasons to believe in the club’s transfer strategy again after he showed glimpses of what’s to come in the club’s pre-season friendly against Aston Villa.

But prior to that moment, Donny had already impressed many at the club. And in no time, the former Ajax man has found an admirer in new teammate Luke Shaw.

According to the Red Devil, Van De Beek has come in and offered plenty of hopes for the future.

The United left-back told MUTV on the back of an impressive bow for a fresh face against Villa: “Really good. It’s all about minutes, and he got that.

“He hasn’t been with us long, obviously he was another who was on international [duty], so he’s done really well considering he’s only trained with us for two days.

“The most important thing is him getting to know the players, knowing how each other play.

“We’ve got a whole week now to slot him in, but so far so good, he’s a really nice guy, and I’m sure he’ll fit in great.”

Speaking to MUTV ahead of the Villa game, club coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said Donny Van De Beek has already impressed him in his first training sessions. And he has no doubts he’ll make a great signing.

According to Ole, “He’s been training only a couple of days, but he’s a bright, bubbly character, “He wants to learn, and the first few signs are positive, not that I doubted that one because I’ve followed him for a few years, of course.

“He’s been a talented youngster, and now we felt he was ready to come here. He felt it was the best place to come, so, for us, it’s a good transfer.”

And in the aftermath of the Villa match, the coach said, “Donny was maybe the biggest plus in the outfield,” “He’s such a finder of space, and he creates time for himself with his timing and movement. I was very happy with his performance.

What to expect from Donny in the new season

As we’ve earlier stated at the beginning of this article, you never know what you’re getting from a foreign signing in the Premier League. But if any of the early signs are anything to go by, then fans can be really optimistic about Donny having a positive impact at the club.

Even club legend, Rio Ferdinand, attested to that.

In a video posted to his YouTube account, the former English international mused, “What does he bring to the team, to this squad?”

“He brings goals, he brings assists, he runs into the box, [he has] a good work ethic and an unbelievable brain. [As an] Ajax guy, he knows how to play good football.

Edwin van der Sar, my old mate – did you see it, by the way, on social media? He put crying faces when I said van de Beek on his way into Man United – he wasn’t happy.

“He knows what he’s letting go, he knows his quality; he knows his class.”
