Nasser Al-Khelaifi refuses to answer when asked about Manchester United takeover update

Reports claimed in June that Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi was contacted by the Glazers in an attempt to persuade Sheikh Jassim bin Hamad al-Thani to increase his bid to buy Manchester United.

The Qatari is also the chairman of the European Clubs’ Association (ECA) and recently fielded questions from United Kingdom journalists after the General Assembly in Berlin.

As expected, one particular matter that arose during his chat with the reporters was the Man United takeover update, but Al-Khelaifi refused to give anything away.

“I’m the chairman of the ECA,” the PSG chief replied when asked about the situation at the Old Trafford club.

He denied earlier in the summer that he had been involved in discussions about the potential sale of the Red Devils to Sheikh Jassim, and he was not interested in playing ball after the matter was brought up again.

There has not been a significant update on the takeover for a while as the buyers keep insisting the sellers are yet to get back to them.

However, reports that the Glazers have taken Man United off the market saw the club’s share value drop by more than £600 million earlier this week.

The owners are reportedly now demanding £10 billion to part with the club in 2025, with the expanded Club World Cup in 2025, a future Premier League broadcast rights deal and the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico influencing their decision to postpone the sale.

They suffered the biggest daily percentage drop in the club’s value since being listed in 2012 as a result, with the previous record a 13.8% drop in March 2020.

The bid team of the Qatar Islamic Bank chairman initially consulted Al-Khelaifi for advice on the club’s valuation.

Both the owners and the buyers are yet to find an agreement as far as the final selling price is concerned, which has continued to delay the takeover.
