Moyes turns to Real Madrid star

Mesut+Ozil+Real+Madrid+CF+v+Athletic+Club+gUbt5U87e1alWhen the Premier League season finally kicks off tomorrow, whichever United XI will take the pitch against Swansea will have a very familiar look to the one that secured a record 20th league title last season.

United’s inactivity in the transfer window throughout the summer has been well documented as has the appalling lack of strategy the club seems to have employed since Ed Woodward replaced David Gill, with United missing out on Thiago Alcantara, before having various bids for Cesc Fabregas turned down.

Today, however, there are better news, for while United still have not sign anybody, at least they seem to have turned their attention to a new target, as newspaper reports that David Moyes is monitoring Mesut Ozil’s situation at Real Madrid.

The German playmaker was on United’s radar three summers ago, when he then decided to join the Spanish giants, but  while Moyes seems convinced that Ozil is the sort of marquee signing the club is desperate for, convincing Real Madrid to part ways with the German international will be far from easy.

Moyes, who continues his pursuit of Marouane Fellaini, has identified in Ozil the sort of technical midfielder United’s midfield needs to compete at the top on both, the domestic and the European front, but Real Madrid have so far shown no signs of wanting to sell the former Werder Bremen man.

However, a couple of factors could help United. First and foremost, Real Madrid have signed Spain U21’s wonderkid Isco and the former Malaga playmaker is expected to feature regularly in Carlo Ancelotti’s side, while the former Chelsea and AC Milan manager is also determined to resurrect Kaka’s career, meaning that Ozil could face serious competition for a starting spot this season.

Furthermore, were Real to finally land Gareth Bale, they could do with recouping some of the money spent on the Welshman which, at least in theory, should make them more willing to listen to any offers than they would at the moment.

United are obviously running out time to make any signings at all and, as talented as Ozil is, one has to wonder whether his name is simply been thrown around because United are looking to just about every midfielder across Europe or whether the club has already made a, hopefully not public, approach for the German international.

The former option, unfortunately, seems likelier, considering that United were linked with Ozil’s team-mate Luka Modric as little as a week ago, as Ed Woodward’s strategy resembles that of a guy who’s stood at the bar all night and now has less than 10 minutes to go to make his move.

David Moyes, however, remains confident.

“I’m confident we’ll have players in before the start of the season, yeah,” Moyes told the Mirror.

“We’re involved in several players we’re looking at and that will continue. Will we get them before the deadline? I hope so. But we’re working very hard to do so.

“This was always going to be a difficult window for me personally, because I joined Manchester United on July 1.

“So that’s given you a short period [in which to do deals] and also to get to know the players, to get to know the market.”
