Money talks for Di Maria

Angel-Di-Maria (1)Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has insisted that Angel Di Maria left the Bernabeu for Old Trafford purely because the European champions could not afford to meet his wage demands.

United broke the British transfer record in the summer when they shelled out £59.7m for the Argentine, whose £200,000-a-week deal makes him the third-highest paid player at the club behind Wayne Rooney and Radamel Falcao, but the Real Madrid manager said his club did not want to sell but had to cave in eventually.

“Di Maria? I was in agreement with the club. There are times when the club needs to say no,” Ancelotti said.

“You can’t change the policies of the club for one player. Di Maria asked for a lot of money and preferred to leave to go find it.

“The club couldn’t give him the money he wanted. I’m the manager of the club; of course, I coach for the club, not for the players.”

Three goals in his last four games and a string of impressive displays suggest Di Maria was money well spent. Real’s loss was definitely United’s gain.
