Michael Carrick handed exciting dilemma as Patrick Dorgu shines in advanced role for Denmark

Manchester United youngster Patrick Dorgu has delivered another timely reminder to Michael Carrick about the attacking threat he can offer.

Dorgu scored a scintillating goal for Denmark during their friendly clash with Ukraine.

The 21-year-old picked up possession on the right flank before bursting forward with purpose, leaving two Ukraine players trailing in his wake.

Spotting the space opening up in front of him, Dorgu drove forward before unleashing a thunderous long-range strike that flew into the net.

The goal instantly reignited the debate among United supporters about his best position.

He was signed as a wing-back but is currently excelling in a more attacking role.

While he remains capable of operating at left-back, occasional lapses in concentration can sometimes leave him exposed defensively.

Carrick handed him opportunities on the left wing on three occasions last season, and Dorgu repaid that faith with goals against Manchester City, Arsenal and Brighton & Hove Albion.

He is not a technical winger like Iliman Ndiaye or Jeremy Doku, but his power, explosive pace and direct running make him a huge threat to full-backs.

It is no surprise that he is drawing comparisons with Gareth Bale, who started his career as a left-back but became one of the best forwards of his generation.

The challenge for INEOS and Carrick next season will be finding the role that maximises those strengths rather than restricting them.

If used correctly, Dorgu has every attribute required to become one of United’s most valuable players over the coming years.
