Michael Carrick confirms Marcus Rashford injury blow ahead of UCL opener vs Sabah

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has confirmed an injury concern for Marcus Rashford following the 2-2 Premier League draw against Everton on the road.

The Red Devils delivered a relatively good showing against the Toffees at the Hill Dickinson Stadium yesterday. They were unfortunate to leave without maximum points.

Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring in the 47th minute, and United looked on course for a victory before Tyrique George equalised for the Toffees, seven minutes before stoppage time.

The Chelsea graduate unleashed a powerful effort to beat goalkeeper Senne Lammens at the near post. Benjamin Sesko scored an 88th-minute header to put the Red Devils on the path to another win.

However, the Toffees had the final laugh as Ainsley Maitland-Niles netted a sensational long-range equaliser. He scored with a sublime effort from outside the box with seconds left on the clock.

Lammens was spotted ball-watching from Maitland-Niles’ effort, and some United fans feel the Belgian shot-stopper could have at least attempted to dive and try to block the effort.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, Carrick was asked about several things, and one of those was about Marcus Rashford, who was replaced in the 70th minute of the game.

When asked whether the substitution was injury-related, the manager acknowledged that the winger felt something and could not continue. He said: “Yeah, he was feeling a bit of something.”

Rashford was not at his best against the Toffees but had a lively game. He had 37 touches with 17 successful passes. The left winger completed three out of five dribbles contested.

The Englishman did not manage a shot on target but worked hard with six duels won alongside four recoveries. He may now need to be assessed before United’s Champions League return.

The Red Devils will be playing their first game in the elite European competition since December 2023. They entertain newcomers Sabah at Old Trafford on Thursday and are favourites to win.

If Rashford is sidelined, we would prefer Matheus Cunha on the left wing with Benjamin Sesko upfront.
