Manchester United have officially confirmed their first signing of the 2025 summer.
Matheus Cunha has sealed a move to Old Trafford from Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the deal now pending final visa approval and player registration.
The club confirmed on ManUtd.com: “Manchester United has reached an agreement with Wolverhampton Wanderers for the signing of Matheus Cunha.”
The Red Devils activated the Brazilian’s £62.5 million release clause, making him the most expensive signing of the INEOS era but will stagger the payment in instalments.
Cunha has signed a five-year contract at Old Trafford with the option of a further year.
The 26-year-old arrives on the back of a superb campaign, registering 17 goals and 6 assists across 36 appearances in all competitions during the 2024–25 season.
The Brazilian is expected to seamlessly adapt to head coach Ruben Amorim’s system. He has thrived in the 3-4-2-1 system as the left-sided number 10 at Wolves.
Cunha will shoulder the attacking responsibility alongside Bruno Fernandes and Amad Diallo.
Fernandes was left to carry the creative load on his own after Diallo sustained an ankle injury in February.
The Ivorian winger only returned to action in the final few games of the season.
He has the ability to drift into pockets of space and create chances from open play. His relentless energy and aggression in pressing make him a vital asset on and off the ball.
A tireless workhorse, he epitomises Amorim’s vision of front-foot football and high-intensity pressing.
The Red Devils are further expected to make at least one more addition to their attack this summer.
They are looking to sign a marquee centre-forward with Liam Delap and Viktor Gyokeres on their shortlist.
