Lisandro Martinez has joined the Man United training camp in the Republic of Ireland today.
Martinez was the final United player to report for pre-season after representing Argentina in the FIFA World Cup final, where he was unfortunately forced off through injury before Spain went on to lift the famous trophy.
The 28-year-old impressed on the biggest stage, with his fearless line-breaking passes earning plenty of praise.
The upcoming campaign could prove pivotal for the former Ajax star, who is now entering the final 12 months of his contract at Old Trafford.
United have an option to extend his stay by another year, but Martinez must prove his fitness before the club considers handing him a fresh long-term deal.
Martinez has been exceptional for United at the back. His ability to read the game, play vertical passes and take responsibility has helped the club.
However, his prolonged spells on the sidelines have become an increasing concern.
The Argentine has failed to make more than 20 Premier League appearances in any of the last three seasons.
Head coach Michael Carrick will now hope Martinez can feature against AC Milan on August 15, using the friendly as the first step towards rebuilding his match fitness.
We do not expect Martinez to be part of the starting XI when United open their Premier League campaign against Hull City in less than two weeks.
Leny Yoro or Ayden Heaven is likely to partner Harry Maguire at the heart of the defence.
