Martial scoops prize

Barclays-POTM-2JPGAnthony Martial has won the Premier League’s Barclays Player of the Month award for September, after making an impressive start to his Manchester United career.

The 19-year-old arrived at Old Trafford on deadline day, with fans sneering at Louis Van Gaal’s decision to sign an unknown teenager rather than an established international, while pundits and media had a field day as they criticised United for spending £36m on the Frenchman.

Martial, however, has since silenced the critics in spectacular fashion, coming off the bench to mark his debut against Liverpool with a superbly taken finish, before adding two in the next fixture as United won 3-2 at Southampton.

The former Monaco striker, who also scored against Ipswich in the Capital One Cup last month, also picked up the man of the match award against Sunderland and has carried on his outstanding form at international level, where he has impressed for France.

Not bad for a waste of money.
