Manchester United superstar Marcus Rashford has shared an emotional story via his Twitter account, heaping plaudits on his former teammate Romelu Lukaku for his overwhelming contribution in the game that saw United beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-1 away from home.
PSG hosted United in the Round of 16 of the 2018-19 Champions League. The French side went into the game with a 2-0 lead over the Mancunian rivals.
Romelu Lukaku broke the deadlock in the 2nd-minute of the game. Ten minutes later, Juan Bernat equalised.
PSG were on the top of their game. Then came the goal that inspired the Red Devils on the pitch and changed the course of not only the whole game but also the entire tie.
Going against the run of play, Lukaku, again, found the nets. The goal had such an impact that it made them believe that they could ensure a heroic comeback on oppositions’ soil.
Diogo Dalot’s long-range strike hit the arm of Presnel Kimpembe’s arm. And, in a dramatic way, the Red Devils were awarded a penalty which Marcus Rashord took and sent home to hand Manchester United devotees a memorable night in the city of love, Paris.
Cherishing that moment, Rashford went to twitter to show his gratitude to Lukaku, who reportedly pushed Rashford forward to take the vital penalty at the dying stages of the game.
He wrote:
“Let me tell you a little story about Romelu Lukaku. We are playing PSG in the second leg of the Champions League, with little little hope of qualifying. 2-0 down on agg. 2 mins in, Rom scores. 30 mins in, Rom scores. We need one more goal to qualify. 94th min – penalty…
“Rom steps up picks up the ball and hands it to me. He knew this was my moment. He knew it would be me that got all news coverage for scoring that penalty and he was ok with that, ignoring the fact that he was the most instrumental part of that win.
“That tells you all you need to know about Romelu Lukaku Selfless, a team player… Never afraid to dim his light for others to shine. That’s my brother and I appreciate him.”
Retweeting that, Lukaku commented:
“My brother for life! What a great moment brother one of the best nights in my career! Like we said before the game we were going to qualify the team! My partner.”
Both now play for different clubs. While the Belgian striker joined Inter Milan from Manchester United in the next summer, Rashford has had been a pivotal cog in Solskjaer’s starting XI. Although their careers now depend on different landscapes, their friendship is still intact.
