Marcus Rashford must improve his finishing or forget about World Cup spot

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford must improve his finishing if he wants to make the England squad for the World Cup in Qatar next month.

The 24-year-old has been one of the leading performers under manager Erik ten Hag this term. Before the international break, he bagged three goals and two assists in the Premier League.

He continued his good form with two goals and one assist against Omonia in the Europa League, but over the past three appearances, he has failed to capitalise on clear-cut chances.

Rashford had as many as 10 shots against Omonia in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford. Most of his efforts happened to be straight at the goalkeeper Francis Uzoho, who was in top form.

Against Newcastle United last weekend, he was guilty of missing a free header right at the end. Casemiro delivered a peach of a cross for the England star, who should have scored the winner.

His frustrating run continued against Spurs yesterday. Rashford squandered two big chances to find the back of the net. He should have scored if he showed more finesse than just power.

Rashford has been getting in superb scoring positions lately but has been letdown by his finishing. This is unlikely to improve his chances of being selected by Gareth Southgate for the World Cup.

Southgate said last month that the United graduate is in the reckoning for a berth, but Rashford must show an improvement over the coming weeks or forget about making the 26-man squad.

United will be back in Premier League action against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Saturday. The Blues are one of Rashford’s favourite opponents. He has five goals and three assists from 15 meetings.

A victory in west London would see United jump into the top four for the first time this season.
