Barcelona defender Marcos Alonso is not keen on a move to Manchester United and prefers to fulfil his contract, according to Marca journalist Luis Rojo.
The Spain international has emerged as a surprise transfer target for the Red Devils this month following a muscular injury for first-choice left-back Luke Shaw.
It was reported on Monday that United are prepared to hand a lucrative two-year contract to the 32-year-old, and he was thinking about the possibility.
However, the speculation has now been dismissed by Rojo, who insists that the player is not considering a move to United and prefers to honour his deal.
Alonso’s current contract expires at the end of the season, but there is an option for another year.
United running out of time to fill left-back void
The Red Devils are currently looking at multiple options to reinforce the left-back department, considering Shaw and Tyrell Malacia are both injured.
Alonso would have been a good signing with his vast Premier League experience. He has managed 47 goal contributions in 179 games in the English top-flight.
His attacking playing style would suit manager Erik ten Hag, but the £103,000-a-week star has the clear mindset to continue at Barcelona despite the arrival of Joao Cancelo.
In our view, United should turn their attention elsewhere. Chelsea’s Marc Cucurella could be the likely candidate. The hierarchy have spoken twice with the Blues.
Cucurella won’t come on the cheap as the Blues will command a high loan fee and will want his current £175,000-a-week wages to be paid during the temporary stint.
However, there is plenty of potential in the 23-year-old, who was Brighton & Hove Albion’s Player of the Year in 2021/22. He is said to welcome a move to Old Trafford.
