Young forward Layla Drury broke into the Manchester United Women’s first team last season.
Drury made her debut in a 5-0 FA Cup victory over Burnley at the Progress With Unity Stadium in January. She also scored in the fixture, becoming the youngest women’s goalscorer for the club.
Overall, the 17-year-old featured in seven games across all competitions, including five appearances as a substitute in the Women’s Super League.
Drury is now set to sign her first professional contract, becoming the youngest player to do so for the Mancunian giants, according to The Guardian.
United view her progress as a success story, having developed her through their academy. They are determined to develop young players who can go on to make an impact in the first team.
Drury is expected to spend next season with the first-team on a full-time basis, allowing her to gain more senior experience.
Drury has played for Wales at the youth international level, but switched her allegiance to England in February.
Away from Drury’s deal, United have strengthened their defensive options with the signing of Andrea Medina from Atletico Madrid.
Medina has signed a three-year contract, with the option to extend it by a further year. She will wear the No.6 shirt.
United have also confirmed the departure of defender Hannah Blundell following the expiration of her contract. She made 95 appearances across all competitions and was named United Women’s Players’ Player of the Year in 2022/23.
Forward Leah Galton has also left as a free agent after eight years of service at the club. She departed as the second-highest women’s goalscorer and third-highest appearance-maker.
