Manchester United vs Tottenham Hotspur: Premier League preview, team news & predicted starting XI

The Premier League returns in midweek and will see Manchester United lock horns with Tottenham Hotspur.

United played out a 0-0 draw against Newcastle United last time out and will be gutted to have come away from the game with just a point.

Tottenham picked up a largely comfortable 2-0 win over Everton in their last game via goals from Harry Kane and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Cristiano Ronaldo scored a hat-trick to seal all three points in this fixture last season, although that seems like a lifetime ago.

When and where will the game take place?

United will play their third straight game at Old Trafford when they take on Antonio Conte’s men.

The game is set to be played on Wednesday night as the final game of day.

Match Preview

Manchester United

United have hit a good patch of late after their horror showing in the Manchester derby earlier this month.

They were held to a goalless draw by Newcastle over the weekend and could have clinched all three points at the death, but Marcus Rashford could not direct his header on target.

The Englishman should return to the starting XI this week after coming off the bench last time out.

There are doubts about the fitness of Anthony Martial and Christian Eriksen, meaning Cristiano Ronaldo and Scott McTominay could be handed starts here.

Tottenham Hotspur

The visitors are in strong form ahead of Wednesday’s game and will move up to second place should they win at Old Trafford.

Kane found the back of the net for a third straight game on Saturday to inch closer to becoming Spurs’ all-time top scorer.

The Englishman will lead the line for the away side on Wednesday, although Richarlison will miss out with an injury.

With Emerson Royal out with a suspension, Matt Doherty could once again fill in at wing-back after a positive display against Everton.

Players to watch – Martínez vs Kane

Despite the fixture congestion, the two sides are looking to rack up points and very little rotation is expected.

Lisandro Martínez has been a mainstay for United this season with largely solid performances on the left side of the central defence.

Kane poses a different test for the diminutive Argentine with his hold-up and link-up play. The English striker has mastered the act of dropping deep to receive the ball and pick out a pass and is always on hand to finish in the box.

Martínez has come up against various types of strikers in his short time at Manchester. The Spurs man might be the most technical one he will ever battle.
