Manchester United veteran goalkeeper Sergio Romero is close to leaving the club. According to a report by the Mirror, Valencia have contacted United for Romero.
They are willing to pay of £6m for the 33-year-old
Sergio Romero joined the club in the summer of 2015. The Spaniard has been impressive in his role as the back-up goalkeeper. He mainly features for United in the cup games.
Dean Henderson’s back at United and the Englishman has put Romero’s future in doubt. Henderson enjoyed a fantastic two-year spell on loan to Sheffield United. He recently signed a new contract extension which keeps him at the club for five more years.
United no1. David De Gea’s recent misfortunes at the back have given Henderson an opening to take his spot.
With United having three world-class goalkeepers present in their squad looking to take the no1 spot, one surely had to leave.
The Argentine was rather unsuccessful in his bid to unseat De Gea. He was already growing weary of playing second fiddle, making only 61 appearances for the club since arriving in 2015.
The lack of playing time at United has cost Romero his spot in the Argentine National team. Arsenal’s Emiliano Martinez replaced him following an impressive spell at the end of last season.
Emi Martinez is guaranteed playing time following his switch to Aston Villa. This makes it imperative for Romero to move in search of playing time as well if he wants to regain his place.
Valencia are understood to have registered their interest to both Man United and Sergio Romero.
