Manchester United U18s lift Premier League North title

While Manchester United’s second season under Erik ten Hag seems destined to fall short of expectations, the Old Trafford faithful have every reason to look forward to the future.

Everything United fans hoped Ten Hag’s troops could achieve in 2023/24 has fallen apart, but the club’s youngsters have restored hope in the red part of Manchester.

Adam Lawrence’s overachieving team squeaked past Wolverhampton Wanderers 2-1 at the Sir Jack Hayward Training Ground on Thursday afternoon to seal the U18 Premier League North title.

In contrast to the first team’s underwhelming Premier League campaign, the young guns have gone from strength to strength to leave rivals Manchester City in the dust with two games to spare.

Gabriele Biancheri’s first-half brace propelled Man United to a season-defining victory, handing them a chance to clinch a coveted double with the U18 Premier League Cup final on the horizon.

Lawrence’s lads have strolled to the title in a dominant campaign, featuring an eye-catching 19 wins out of 22, including an emphatic 9-1 victory against Liverpool earlier in April.

Just one league loss this season testifies to Lawrence’s impressive work in the youth ranks, with the first U18 Premier League title since 2017/18 a fitting reward.

But the season is not over yet for the young guns.

As the northern champions, Man Utd will encounter the winners of the southern title at the end of 2023/24 to determine the champions in a play-off fixture.

In all likelihood, it will be Chelsea. The Blues reside at the top of their section with three games in hand over second-placed West Ham United going into the season finale.

Before that, United can round off an outstanding campaign in the north next week when they take on Man City in the Premier League Cup final.
