According to The Telegraph, Manchester United want to sign Dayot Upamecano from RB Leipzig. Though, it has also been clarified that the Mancunian club must need to shift some names first before considering moving forward with their lucrative intention.
Marcos Rojo and Phil Jones have been mentioned as the ones who should feature on the list of burdens for the Reds Devils. However, the report written by James Ducker doesn’t suggest any suitors that are ready to splash their cash on the United veterans.
There are concerns roaming over United’s back-line, with no defensive addition being made over the transfer window so far. The club currently has eight centre-backs, including the inspiring youngster in Teden Mengi, who has recently been given the first-team status at the club.
Furthermore, Chris Smalling is believed to be edging closer to securing his return to AS Roma on a permanent basis.
Although Marcos Rojo has returned to United training, it is highly unlikely that he will pursue his career at the red side of Manchester beyond this transfer window. Napoli are keeping a firm eye on the Argentinean defender, who could also play as a left-back.
Phil Jones was linked with a move away from Old Trafford during the earlier stages of the summer transfer window, the noises around Manchester United are indicating that he might stay put for at least another year at the club, with the English defender’s contract with the club set to expire in June 2023.
Axel Tuanzebe and Eric Bailly’s injury record make them unreliable. This leaves United vulnerable with only two proper options- Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.
Dayot Upamecano has just renewed his stay by penning a new contract with the German club which is believed to keep him at the club until 2023, same as Jones.
However, Upamecano’s contract contains a release clause of €42m that will only be activated next summer. And should United want Upamecano in this ongoing transfer window, they will have to a significant amount and more than what his release clause demands.
