Manchester United to free up funds to sign €50m ‘top target’

Manchester United are reportedly upping their efforts to sign RB Leipzig defender Dayot Upamecano. Mark Ogden writes “Upamecano is a top target.”

As Donny Van de Beek’s official announcement is imminent, United need to make financial room for other signings- reportedly Jadon Sancho and Upamecano.

Fabrizio Romano confirms that Roma are expected to submit a fresh bid for Chris Smalling. He also adds that United are looking to add a defender if an opportunity arrives.

Roma’s earlier bid was reported to be around €16m-€17m. United were not looking to go below their €20m asking price.

United should sell Smalling if the fresh bid matches their expectations.

Solskjaer is desperate to bolster his shaky back-line – despite spending £135million on defenders alone last summer in Harry Maguire and Aaron Wan-Bissaka.

The Athletic have claimed United will continue to scout Upamecano in a bid to find Maguire a long-term partner in the heart of defence.

The 21-year-old performed brilliantly during Leipzig’s run to the Champions League semi-finals.

James Cooper confirmed that United would like a fresh center-back to challenge Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly.

Solskjaer is understood to be concerned about the fitness and reliability of Lindelof, Bailly and Axel Tuanzebe which is only further intensifying the club’s desire to bring in a new center-back. Marco Rojo and Phil Jones could hardly make Solskjaer’s XI and could leave soon.

Dayot Upamecano renewed his contract which will expire in 2023. His current release clause stands at €50m.
