Manchester United technical director Jason Wilcox steps into Dan Ashworth’s role ahead of the January transfer window

Manchester United made it clear in an email sent to staff on Wednesday that technical director Jason Wilcox will replace Dan Ashworth, according to the Daily Mail.

The Red Devils parted with their sporting director over the weekend after just five months of work, and Wilcox has now stepped into his role ahead of the January transfer window.

The former Southampton director of football is now the point of contact for the scouting department at Man United on any recruitment matters.

Interim director of recruitment Christopher Vivell is also expected to take a more prominent role. The club have no plans to appoint another sporting director

Co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has ditched the role. Wilcox will oversee recruitment, while Sir Dave Brailsford and chief executive officer Omar Berrada will also have input.

He has already started work, leading the talks with Paraguayan club Cerro Porteno over a deal for 17-year-old left-back Diego Leon.

Berrada had a major influence on the appointment of manager Ruben Amorim, flying to Lisbon to negotiate with Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas face-to-face.

United are ready to sell Marcus Rashford if an offer comes forward in January, while they could be open to doing deals for Christian Eriksen, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof before they are out of contract next summer.

Jonny Evans and Tom Heaton will also become free agents at the end of the season, while Man United would be delighted to get rid of Antony and Casemiro.

Amorim needs better players suited to his style of play if he is to succeed at the club, and Wilcox will be more than ready to help him get his squad into the perfect shape.
