Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana is beginning to prove his quality after a disastrous start to his Red Devils’ career, with his performances significantly improving since his return from the Africa Cup of Nations last month.
However, the 27-year-old regularly tested the patience of his teammates and fans with his frequent errors earlier in the season, which led to one of the youth players blasting him during a training session.
According to The Athletic, a young player who had barely played a first-team game said, ‘Are you going to save one or what?’ after he felt Onana was not stopping enough shots in one training session.
The former Inter Milan star left his teammates in doubt following some of those pitiful performances, with some questioning why manager Erik ten Hag parted company with Spanish goalkeeper David de Gea.
While Manchester City pounced on a mistake by Sofyan Amrabat on Sunday after he failed to deal with a pass after Onana played out of from the back, the goalie has been involved in three passing moves this season that have resulted in the Red Devils having a shot.
Two passes led to goals, and Ten Hag will feel justified in his decision to buy Onana and stick with him during those underwhelming weeks.
His first season in the Premier League has not gone as expected, but De Gea, Alisson and Ederson also struggled in their debut campaigns in the English top flight before establishing themselves as top stars.
Onana will be desperate to follow suit and is already starting to show what he is capable of since the turn of the year.
He has the potential to become the best goalkeeper in the land, but he needs plenty of help from his defensive teammates who keep letting him down with schoolboy errors.
