Manchester United should make move for Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos

Manchester United continue to explore several options as they look to strengthen their midfield this summer.

United are prioritising midfielders with high technical ceilings, capable of playing multiple roles in the middle of the park.

Bournemouth youngster Alex Scott has been identified as an ideal target, while the Red Devils remain keen on Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni.

The Mancunian giants have now added Chelsea midfielder Andrey Santos to their list of targets, but they have yet to make a formal approach.

The Blues are willing to listen to offers and have reportedly set an asking price of £50 million for the midfielder. Newcastle United are also interested in the Vasco da Gama academy graduate.

Santos would be a perfect addition to United’s midfield

Santos did not enjoy regular playing time at Chelsea last season, starting just 25 games across all competitions. He was an unused substitute in 10 Premier League matches.

The 22-year-old is now said to be ready for a new challenge. He could be United’s perfect midfield signing.

Although naturally a defensive midfielder, Santos can equally play in a more advanced role. He showed that on loan at Strasbourg in the 2024/25 season.

The 22-year-old was a constant attacking threat, ranking third in the Strasbourg squad for Ligue 1 goal involvements. He scored 10 goals from 5.06 expected goals (xG), highlighting his exceptional finishing ability.

Santos ranked fourth for big chances created (nine) and third for accurate long balls per game.

Despite his limited opportunities, he still impressed in a deeper midfield role at Chelsea last term. Among Premier League midfielders, the Brazilian ranked third for duels won percentage and defensive duels won percentage, highlighting his defensive efficiency.

Also, only former United midfielder Casemiro, Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace and Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes attempted more line-breaking passes than Santos last season.

Santos has the attributes to become a world-class midfielder. If Chelsea’s asking price is reasonable, United should not hesitate to sanction a move for the Brazilian.
