Manchester United are reportedly regarded as ‘serious candidates’ to land the signature of Edinson Cavani when his Paris Saint-Germain contract expires at the end of the season.
The Uruguay international has been regularly linked with the Red Devils in recent years and earlier in January, the club declined to sign him due to his £360,000-a-week demands and Les Parisiens’ £16.8m price tag.
Still, the speculation does not appear to cease and L’Equipe via SportWitness claims that United are serious contenders to sign the South American on a free transfer and have ‘significant financial means’ to do so.
United were obviously short of a centre-forward option at the beginning of the year after Marcus Rashford sustained a stress fracture in his back during an FA Cup third round replay against Wolves.
After being put off in Cavani’s pursuit, the club eventually secured the signature of Odion Ighalo on loan from Shanghai Shenhua and the Nigerian has proved a success with four goals from eight outings.
United will have the chance to sign Ighalo on a permanent deal for around £15m this summer and it will come as a surprise, if they are still interested in landing Cavani.
Obviously, Cavani has fared much better than Ighalo during his career but at the age of 33, there are genuine concerns whether he can adapt to a new league with higher physical demands.
Meanwhile, he has sustained five separate injuries during the current campaign and it does not appear worthwhile to offer him a contract with a sizeable signing-on fee on top of hefty wages.
