Manchester United will head into the 2026/27 season with one primary aim – winning at least one piece of major silverware.
For a club of United’s size and resources, any talk of being happy with the team merely contending for a top-four finish in the Premier League cannot be entertained.

Their title rivals are no mugs. Arsenal can be tough to break down, while Manchester City are devastating when everything clicks into gear.
However, neither of them are unbeatable. The same goes for Liverpool and any other potential contenders. Finishing top of the Premier League must be the number one target.
A dose of realism will be needed in the Champions League
United will return to the Champions League with a point to prove after failing to make an impact when they last qualified in 2023.
They finished bottom of a group containing Bayern Munich, FC Copenhagen and Galatasaray, which was an embarrassing outcome for a club of their stature.
The Red Devils have not won the Champions League since defeating Chelsea in the 2007/08 final, so returning to the pinnacle of European football may take some time.
Clubs such as Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich are currently light-years ahead in terms of their experience in UEFA’s top club competition.
A run to the quarter-final would unquestionably be a step in the right direction. Anything beyond that would be an additional bonus.
United must ultimately demonstrate they deserve their place in the Champions League before mounting a sustained bid for the title in 2027/28.
United must take the domestic cups seriously
The League Cup and FA Cup are viewed as irrelevant by many of the fans who think football started in 1992.
However, while the Premier League and Champions League are the main targets, the Red Devils cannot afford to take the domestic cups lightly next season.
The second-round defeat at Grimsby Town in this season’s League Cup was not only humiliating but also had a detrimental impact on the squad’s morale.
Exiting the FA Cup in the third round following a home defeat by Brighton & Hove Albion was less embarrassing, but still left a sour taste.
Winning matches in football breeds confidence. The momentum which can be built from a deep cup run cannot be underestimated.
Barely anyone remembers who finishes fourth. By contrast, the winners of the League Cup and FA Cup have something to brag about. United must take both competitions seriously next season.
