Manchester United receive double injury boost ahead of AZ Alkmaar game

Manchester United have received a double injury boost ahead of the Europa League meeting against AZ Alkmaar on Thursday night.

The Red Devils have been hampered with multiple injury concerns over the past month but they have received a boost for the midweek clash with a couple of first-team stars back in contention.

In a report covered by United’s official website, it is revealed that both Diogo Dalot and Angel Gomes have recovered from their respective knocks and they are part of the 21-man travelling squad.

Still, there are a number of notable absentees with Anthony Martial (thigh), Luke Shaw (hamstring), Aaron Wan-Bissaka (tonsillitis), Phil Jones, Eric Bailly (knee) and Paul Pogba (ankle) recovering from their respective concerns.

Pogba passed a late fitness test to play through the entire 90 minutes against Arsenal on Monday night but it appears that he has yet to completely recover from the ankle swelling sustained during the Rochdale clash.

When pressed further on the midfielder’s situation, Solskjaer indicated that the Frenchman needs some rest and he would not have picked the 26-year-old even if he was fit due to concerns over the astroturf at Alkmaar.

“I probably wouldn’t risk him on astroturf anyway, even if he was available for this game. But he needs a bit of rest now,” he told in a press conference.

The Red Devils have not won an away game in any competition since the stunning 3-1 Champions League triumph at Paris Saint-Germain in March and they are currently on a nine-game winless streak on the road.

With Alkmaar contesting on an artificial pitch, the game won’t be straightforward but Solskjaer will be hoping that the young and fringe players can produce a strong display to come up with maximum points.
