Manchester United started their midfield revamp swiftly, agreeing a deal to sign Brazil international Ederson from Atalanta.
United then shifted their attention to Mateus Fernandes, but were reluctant to meet West Ham United’s £85 million asking price for the Portuguese midfielder.
The Red Devils have missed out on Fernandes, who has now joined Tottenham Hotspur.
United have continued their search for midfield reinforcements, with Real Madrid’s Aurelien Tchouameni among their targets.
United handed positive Tchouameni update
Transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano has described Tchouameni as United’s ‘dream signing‘ this summer.
The France international faces an uncertain future at Madrid following the arrival of manager Jose Mourinho.
Journalist Ben Jacobs has now revealed that Tchouameni would be open to a Premier League move, potentially giving United the chance to sign him.
“Tchouameni is still trying to figure out what his exact role will be under Mourinho”, Jacobs told The United Stand.
“If his role changes and game time diminishes, he would be open to a move to the Premier League. He’ll make a decision on his future after the World Cup.”
Tchouameni has two years left on his current deal, but Madrid are expected to demand a hefty fee for him. He could also command a huge salary.
The Bordeaux academy graduate is the most accomplished of United’s current midfield targets, which include Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, Borussia Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha and Brighton & Hove Albion’s Carlos Baleba.
Given his experience at Madrid, Tchouameni possesses the big-game experience and mentality to play for United. He could be Casemiro’s best replacement.
If Tchouameni indicates he is open to leaving Madrid, United should step up their interest in him.
Meanwhile, Dortmund are prepared to listen to offers for Nmecha. The German side reportedly value him at around £103m.
