As per Todofichajes, Manchester United have put a €3m price tag on 33-year-old Sergio Romero. Under his current contract, Romero earns £100,000-a-week and it expires next summer
Romero wanted to leave last summer and Everton were interested in a loan deal but United rejected the offer on deadline day, deeming it unsatisfactory.
According to the Daily Star, Romero was left seething after finding out on social media that he has been axed from the club’s 25 member Premier League squad.
Romero has effectively been frozen out of the team. He has also been removed from the club’s UEFA Champions League squad for the group stage, with the 3rd goalkeeper spot going to veteran keeper Lee Grant.
At one point, Romero was touted as ‘world’s best backup goalkeeper’. However, things have definitely gone south for the Argentinean given that Dean Henderson has stayed on at Old Trafford.
Unless United loan out Henderson in January in order to give him more playing time, Romero is going to be on the outside looking in. He is still quite an effective goalkeeper and would easily be first-choice at many top-level clubs.
A goalkeeper at his level should be playing regularly, and any club that needs a short-term goalkeeping option should act now.
Todofichajes report that a few clubs are interested in signing him and the MLS appears to be his most likely destination.
Given how well he has served United when called upon and how he has always been supremely professional about being the #2 goalkeeper, we wish Romero nothing but the best of luck.
