Manchester United are reportedly prioritising their transfer business on two players during the final four weeks of the summer transfer window. The Red Devils have already landed the services of Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka this summer, and they are currently giving importance to strengthening the central defensive department.
According to The Manchester Evening News, the Red Devils are keen on pursuing the signature of defender Harry Maguire from Leicester City despite failing with an opening bid worth £70m. The same publication claims that the club are likely to follow up with another transfer offer, given the Foxes could be tempted to accept a package of around £75m.
Elsewhere, the Red Devils appear keen on sanctioning the sale of striker Romelu Lukaku, who has been on the radar of Inter Milan. Nerazzurri chief Beppe Marotta has publicly acknowledged that the club are in the running to sign the Belgium international and it is reported that United will hold fresh negotiations with the Serie A outfit in order to push through the forward’s exit.
United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has placed the focus on bolstering the club’s leaky backline this summer and Wan-Bissaka is expected to provide a significant improvement at right-back with his strong tackling and interception skills.
Likewise, Maguire has been a commanding presence for the Foxes in the past two seasons in the Premier League and he could potentially form the central defensive partnership alongside Victor Lindelof with his impressive concentration and distribution from the back.
Aside from Lindelof, United have four senior central defensive options in Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, Eric Bailly and Marcos Rojo, but none have managed to maintain a level of consistency with their performances. Bailly, in particular, has been hampered by numerous injuries while Rojo has been out of contention for a while.
